sustainability statement

Sustainability is one of the core pillars of Quiet Mornings Ltd. To show you that this is not just an empty claim, I’ve made a list of all the choices I’ve made for Quiet Mornings to be as sustainable as possible. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

online presence

For my web hosting, I chose the most sustainable provider I could find. Krystal is both a Certified B Corporation and a member of 1% for the planet. If you want to learn more, you can read more on their website.

Your photos will be delivered through an online gallery. While I don’t know about their sustainability practices in regards to online storage, I did make some choices to make your gallery as sustainable as possible:

  • The availability of your gallery is limited — four months for portrait and brand sessions, and one year for weddings. You have to option to extend this period, but that’s your choice.
  • The products in your gallery store all come from sustainable businesses.
  • Your photo files are optimised so they take up less space without taking away from the quality of the file.

materials

When it comes to materials, I tend to use what I have. When possible, I borrow or rent additional items. And I won’t replace things until absolutely necessary.

When I need to buy materials, these are the things I keep in mind:

  • The quality and lifespan — sturdiness, materials, production process.
  • Small and sustainable businesses where possible.
  • Your prints and albums come from a sustainable supplier.

In addition to this, Quiet Mornings is a nearly paperless business.

travel

As a photographer, travel is the one thing that impacts my ecological footprint the most. Having moved from a big city in the Netherlands to rural Scotland, my footprint has increased significantly. However, I still do whatever I can to keep my impact to a minimum, including the following:

  • I have a fuel-efficient car.
  • I take public transport when possible.
  • When air travel is the only reasonable option, I don’t just fly in and out for work. I will always try to combine it with something else.
  • When I need accommodation, I always look for sustainable options.

sessions and weddings

Sustainability is at the heart of how we design your photo session or wedding because the world shouldn’t have to suffer at our expense. Some of the things we consider include — but are not limited to:

  • Using what’s already there.
  • Wearing your favourite outfit instead of buying something new.
  • Choosing sustainable options when buying materials.
  • Working with sustainable vendors and venues.
  • Limiting the number of locations.

In addition to this, there are some things I won’t allow and will not photograph should you include them in your session or wedding:

  • Animals other than your pets
  • Smoke cannons
  • Non-sustainable confetti

artificial intelligence

The big elephant in the room when it comes to sustainability. While AI can be useful for a myriad of things, its impact on the environment is enormous. So I decided to limit my use of it to the following:

  • Editing — I trained an AI program to add my colour edits to the RAW photo files. To keep my impact at a minimum, I will only send those photos I want to deliver. The rest of the editing process (selecting, cropping, black and white edits) I do myself.
  • Spelling and grammar — English is not my first language, and I regularly make mistakes in spelling and grammar. So I have a program on my computer that notifies me of any mistakes I make.

On a side note: if you’re just as annoyed with the AI-answer in Google Search as I am, type “-
ai” after your question and it won’t show anymore.

1% for the planet

As a member of 1% for the Planet, I committed to donating at least 1% of my annual sales to environmental organisations. As one single person, there’s only so much I can do, but there are organisations out there doing incredible work to help our planet on a much larger scale. By donating 1% of my annual sales, I can support their work.
